Even with improvements in preventative dentistry, tooth decay is still one of the most common problems plaguing patients today. Most people will experience tooth decay at some point in their lives. Luckily, there are more safe and more effective restorative options than ever before. Beyond Dental and Implant Center belongs to a select group of dental offices that specialize in inlays and Onlays. Inlays and Onlays have some benefits over traditional restorations.
Dental Inlays and Onlays, as known as inlay restorations or indirect fillings, are often used in place of traditional fillings and dental crowns. They are considered a conservative alternative to dental crowns because they preserve more of the natural tooth structure. These restorations are ideal for a tooth that has too much damage for a filling, but not enough to warrant the use of a crown.
Both Inlays and Onlays are prefabricated in our laboratory using ceramic materials, such as porcelain or zirconia. Restoration is considered an inlay when it is bonded within the center of the occlusal (biting) surface. Restoration is considered only when it extends over the cusps of the occlusal surface. Onlays are ideal for instances of tooth decay in the tight space between two teeth.
Much like dental crowns, the inlay procedure is usually completed in two appointments. During the first appointment, Dr. Cory Nguyen must prepare the damaged tooth by removing any decayed material. We will numb the area using a local anesthetic and drill the tooth to clean out the cavity. Once the tooth had been properly cleaned, we will make an impression and insert a temporary inlay.
The impression will be sent to our cutting-edge laboratory, where our lab technicians will fabricate your final inlay. Inlays are made from ceramic materials because of their unmatched aesthetics. Ceramics possess the same light-scattering properties as natural enamel. They can also be color-matched to your enamel, making them virtually indistinguishable from the rest of your tooth.
Once your permanent inlay arrives, we can schedule your second appointment. During this appointment, we will remove the temporary inlay and check the margins of your new restoration. We may need to make minor adjustments to ensure the perfect fit. After we ensure a proper fit, the inlay will be permanently bonded to the tooth using a special cement and curing light.
There are some benefits to the conservative approach of Inlays and Onlays. For one, they offer a superior fit that preserves more healthy tooth structure. This is better for your long-term oral health, as it reduces your risk of future complications. They also offer superior esthetics and stability. Inlay restorations are unlikely to discolor over time, and their superior fit can strengthen a damaged tooth, rather than weaken it. Your tooth will also be easier to clean than those with a dental crown. Crowns can trap bacteria and foster decay if you do not take the proper precautions. An inlay will safeguard the area of decay thanks to its precise fit.
