Choosing the Perfect Materials for Dental Implants

Dental implants mimic the appearance and function of natural teeth, crafted from robust, biocompatible materials. Noted for their long-lasting durability and ability to fuse with the jawbone, these materials ensure sustained support and solidity. At Beyond Dental & Implant Center, Dr. Cory Nguyen, DDS, can guide you to choose the perfect materials aligning with your unique needs and preferences, ensuring a reliable and realistic result. Implants have transformed the treatment techniques for missing teeth, serving as an alternate to dentures and bridges. The Beyond Dental & Implant Center puts forth a wide variety of implant options to accommodate varying tooth replacement requirements. Typically, dental implants are created with a titanium alloy, a material based on the initial titanium implants. Though effective, metallic materials may not suit everyone. Therefore, research is continually pursuing alternative implant materials.

Titanium Implants

The majority of dental implants consist of titanium, a material initially used thanks to a fortuitous discovery by Per-Ingvar Brånemark, a Swedish orthopedic surgeon, in the 1950s. During a study on bone regeneration and recovery, he noted that bones could adhere to titanium, which triggered the creation of dental implants. However, the initial titanium implants were too soft, which led to subsequent titanium implants incorporating additional metals to enhance their strength and performance, delivering a 98% success rate.

Zirconia Implants

Despite titanium’s outstanding performance, it may not be the ideal solution for every patient seeking tooth replacement. Hence, the continuous exploration for new materials has yielded zirconia implants. Because of their white-colored posts, zirconia implants are also known as ceramic implants and are considered metal-free options. However, they contain small amounts of metal for added durability. Like titanium, the jawbone fuses with zirconia implants, offering sturdy support for replacement teeth.

Which is the best material?

Both zirconia and titanium implants can effectively support replacement teeth. In both cases, the bone fuses with the post, and both materials are biocompatible. So, which one should you opt for? With more than fifty years of application and related R&D, titanium implants have proven to be sturdy and durable, offering significant resistance to daily wear. They also offer flexibility in terms of their availability as either one-piece or two-piece implants, which facilitate off-center positions while ensuring perfect teeth alignment.

On the other hand, zirconia implants serve as a metal-free alternative, perfect for those with metal allergies or for individuals who feel uncomfortable having metallic implants. The white posts blend in seamlessly with the color of the crowns, thus not appearing conspicuous even in case of thin or receding gums, unlike the silver-colored titanium posts. Zirconia implants give an illusion of natural tooth roots, though they lack the flexibility of titanium implants given that they are available only as single-piece variants and require strategic placement in your jaw. During our initial consultation, we’ll discuss the best options for you.

While titanium continues to be a popular choice, other non-metallic materials are also showing promising results. For further information or to schedule an online appointment, reach out to us.
