Invisalign gained FDA approval in 1998, and since then Invisalign aligners have become a popular choice for their invisibility and removability. It is a type of dental brace that uses clear tray aligners strong enough to put pressure on certain parts of the teeth to slowly move them to where they should be. It shouldn’t be confused with a retainer, however, as Invisalign actually moves the teeth, whereas a retainer holds teeth in place. The plastic trays are made to Invisalign’s own specifications and manufactured in their own facilities. An Express treatment, for example, would be suitable for someone with a mild case, whereas a more complex one would need the Full treatment. A mouth with very crooked teeth or an overbite will need more time to move the teeth into an ideal position, which will have a direct impact on the cost.

Some dental insurance plans may offer partial orthodontic coverage for children under 18 years of age. More providers are also including cover for adult orthodontics in response to the increasing number of adults choosing this form of dental treatment. If an insurance plan covers Invisalign, take note of how much is covered and any lifetime maximum per insured person. If it’s not covered, some insurance plans may offer supplemental orthodontic cover.

The cost of Invisalign per month can range from $50 to $400 depending on your dentist, the overall cost of your treatment, and the length of your payment plan. Your monthly Invisalign cost will be determined by a dentist because the Invisalign business does not set the pricing for the product.

Although Invisalign treatment tends to be a little more costly than traditional orthodontic braces, in many cases there’s not a lot of difference. Some factors affecting the cost of Invisalign are:

• Complexity of treatment – the more complex the problem, the more time that will be needed and the greater the final cost. Complex cases will also typically require more frequent follow-up appointments which can, in turn, affect the cost.
• Patient co-operation – If a patient does not follow the instructions and guidelines given to them, it could increase the treatment time and more aligners may be needed.
• Provider – costs can vary between clinics, so it’s always a good idea to get comparison quotes before committing to a particular provider.
