What is a cosmetic crown?

Cosmetic crowns are one of the most popular treatments for damaged teeth. A cosmetic crown is an artificial tooth that helps restore the function of the broken tooth, as well as improve the tooth’s appearance and strengthen its structure of the tooth. Aside from replacing broken or chipped teeth, cosmetic crowns are also used as a treatment for decaying teeth, damaged fillings, post root canal therapy, and other cosmetic improvements as requested by the patient. Usually, a cosmetic crown is made of porcelain, ceramic, or even gold, and created to look like a real tooth. It will be shaped to match the size and color of your natural teeth and ensure a uniform appearance with the rest of the teeth. It is then fitted over the damaged tooth and sealed to secure the crown.

Types of cosmetic crown

Porcelain is the commonly used material for a cosmetic crown. On the other hand, there are other types of cosmetic crowns that are used, albeit not as popular. One is porcelain fused to a metal crown (PFM) and gold crown.

The former is composed of crowns that are fixed to a metal alloy base. However, the metal base can be visible when gum receding occurs. The latter, on the other hand, are only used in special cases, especially in people who tend to grind their teeth.

How a cosmetic crown is created and fitted?

Fitting a cosmetic crown usually involves two stages. However, for two or more teeth that requires cosmetic crowns, it would take several sessions to complete the entire procedure.

In the first stage, we will clean and reshape the affected tooth using a small drill. This procedure is necessary to ensure that the tooth is in good condition and the right size and shape, before crown fitting. Next, we will make a mold of your teeth that will be sent to a dental laboratory to begin the production of a cast for your crown. While waiting for the final crown, we will require you to wear a temporary crown until such time that the permanent crown is ready. At the next stage, the new crown will be attached. First, we will use acid to create a rough surface for your damaged tooth. The procedure is meant to ensure the secured bonding of the dental cement to the artificial crown. Next, we will fit the crown into its final position and secure it in place using cement.

There is no reason to delay that perfect smile you wish to have.
