Where You Need to Begin Storing Your Toothbrush

Posted on 3/30/2019 by Dr. Cory Nguyen
Where You Need to Begin Storing Your ToothbrushDoes it matter where you store your toothbrush? If you've consistently kept your toothbrush in your bathroom next to the sink, you may not have considered this question. However, following some simple tips can keep your brush free of dangerous bacteria and germs.

Keep it Away from the Toilet
Think about all the germs that are probably swirling around in your toilet. Now consider that many of those germs enter into the air, and some of them might even settle on your toothbrush. Keeping your brush in a separate room away from the toilet is always a good idea.

Store Your Toothbrush Away from Other Toothbrushes

Do you have one community toothbrush holder in your bathroom? If so, you might want to think about what you are spreading between your family and roommates. Don't let your brush touch someone else's brush. Bacteria can easily cross contaminate other brushes.

Keep it in the Open
You might think that storing your brush in an airtight container can keep your brush clean, but this is a bad idea. You want your brush to dry thoroughly, so it needs good air circulation. If the brush stays moist in a drawer or cabinet, bacteria will grow.

Store Your Toothbrush Facing Up

Make sure that when you store your toothbrush that it remains upright. Gravity is your friend. Keeping your brush upright in a holder or cup will allow water to drain away from the brush, drying it out.

Rinse it Well
Before you store your toothbrush, make sure you rinse it out well. This will ensure that debris and toothpaste are removed from the head of the brush before you leave it to dry.
