When your teeth are crooked, it can have a significant impact on your smile, and your confidence. In addition to affecting your appearance, crooked teeth can also impact your oral health, leading to issues such an increased risk for tooth decay and damage, uneven tooth wear, bruxism, and TMJ disorder. Traditionally, metal braces have been used to realign your teeth, enhancing your oral health and your smile. While still popular and very effective, the visibility of metal braces can cause many patients to become self-conscious. At Beyond Dental and Implant Center, we can help to straighten your teeth more discreetly with clear braces.
Clear or Ceramic Braces
Clear braces, also called ceramic braces, are very similar to traditional metal braces. These braces use brackets and wires to realign your teeth, enhancing the beauty of your smile and improving your oral health. The biggest difference between clear braces and metal braces is that the brackets are made from tooth-colored material that enables them to more easily blend in with the color of your natural teeth. The wires are still often metal, however, although there are some types of wires that are made from a tooth-colored or clear material. With clear braces, your treatment is much more discreet.
Much like traditional braces, clear braces use elastic O-rings, or ligatures to hold the wires in place. Other types of clear braces are self-litigating. The wires are held in place using small brackets that work to tighten your wires as your teeth are moved into proper alignment.
Another option for clear braces is clear aligners. Rather than brackets and wires, this treatment uses a series of clear plastic aligners to move your teeth. These aligners are made from digital impressions of your mouth. They are meant to be worn for two weeks at a time before switching to the next set. Each set is slightly different, which helps to gradually realign your teeth, guiding them to where they need to go. Once in place, the clear aligners disappear from view, rendering them practically invisible in your smile. Most people will be unable to tell that you are wearing anything at all.
In addition to being much more discreet, clear aligners are also removable. However, they should be worn for 20 to 22 hours every day to ensure optimal results in the shortest amount of time. They are made to be removed when you eat and when you brush your teeth. Because of this feature, you do not have to worry about avoiding certain types of foods and your oral care is much easier.
Are Clear Braces Right for Me?
While clear braces are a much more discreet option for realigning your teeth, they may not be the best solution for everyone. The brackets of clear braces are not as strong as metal brackets, and they can be damaged. Additionally, clear ligatures can become discolored, rendering your braces more obvious. Clear aligners cannot correct severe orthodontic issues. It may be possible, however, to begin treatment with regular braces and then switch to clear aligners later. We can help to determine if clear braces or clear aligners are the right solutions for you.
Correcting the alignment of your teeth can greatly enhance your smile, your oral health, and your quality of life. Clear braces help to achieve these goals in a much more discreet manner.
